The winners of this year’s World Food Photography Awards, formerly Food Photographer of the Year, have been announced at a ceremony in London.
Chinese photographer Xiaoling Li took the overall prize for her image, The Elderly Having Delicious Food, shot in Shuangliu Ancient Town in the Sichuan province of China.
“The elderly ladies in the picture are ‘setting up a Dragon Gate formation’,” said Li. “This is an expression used in China to refer to neighbourhood friends coming together to chat, gossip and share stories. They eat the famous Sichuan snack 'spring rolls’. Food makes these people happy; they enjoy a beautiful and joyful life.”
The competition, open to professional and non-professional photographers, had close to 10,000 entries this year, whittled down to 185 finalists and finally 25 category winners. The judging panel consisted of photographers like David Loftus and chefs including Henrique Sá Pessoa, René Redzepi and Jamie Oliver.
A selection of the finalists’ images will be on display in London at Fortnum & Mason until 2 June and then the Museum of the Home from 3 June to 7 September.
If you can’t get to either of those, enjoy a selection of the category winners in the gallery below and head to the World Food Photography Awards website to see all the finalists’ images.
