The Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland 2022 is out and there are a number of notable additions. Restaurants in Britain and Ireland continue to fight their way back after an extremely challenging couple of years. But if anything, standards have risen across the board, which is reflected in the addition of some new stars, and the retention of others.
Foregoing the usual ceremony due to pandemic restrictions and safety concerns, the Michelin Guide made its star revelation for 2022 on social media, announcing one new three-Michelin-star restaurant – L’Enclume, in Cartmel, Cumbria, by chef Simon Rogan.
There was some notable movement in the two-star category, with Dublin getting a brace of two-star restaurants – Chapter One by Mickael Viljanen, and Liath, in Blackrock, by chef Damien Grey. In London, Jeremy Chan’s Ikoyi was promoted to two stars, as was The Clove Club in Shoreditch. Wales got a new two-star restaurant, along with Gareth Ward's Ynyshir, Machynlleth, Powys.

What are Michelin stars?
Michelin stars are awarded to restaurants that have been judged to have met particularly high standards. The highest accolade is three stars, which, according to the Michelin Guide, are awarded to restaurants offering ‘exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey’. Two stars are presented for ‘excellent cooking, worth a detour’, and one star can be won for ‘high-quality cooking, worth a stop’. Discover more: What is a Michelin Star and how do you get one?
