Chef Alex Dilling’s guide to the Cotswolds

When he’s not cooking at his eponymous London restaurant, this is where the chef likes to eat, drink and food shop in the increasingly glitzy English region

The Cotswolds is a verdant region in England’s Southwest dotted with quintessential market towns and quaint villages, with the cities of Oxford, Bristol and Bath on its borders. With its profile growing internationally and celebrity residents such as the Beckhams and soon, reportedly, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, there’s probably never been a more vibrant and varied local food scene.

One person who knows the Cotswolds better than most is chef Alex Dilling. When he’s not cooking at his eponymous restaurant at London’s Hotel Café Royal, he loves to spend time in the Cotswolds, where he has a home, and has even popped up to cook at some of his favourite venues, including the Wild Rabbit pub in Chipping Norton.

Here’s his guide to where to eat in the Cotswolds. As well as Pubs and restaurants, Dilling also recommends the Burford Garden Centre, for its “incredible artisan produce area”, Upton Smokery Farm Shop, also in Burford, for “exceptional smoked meats”, and The Cotswold Cheese Company (various locations).

Bull, Burford

Great for a coffee in the lounge or the intimate bar tucked away in the middle. They have some really interesting contemporary artwork. The interiors are a very unique mix of modern and antique.

Eleven Bibury

This is a lovely cafe with lots of cosy corners and a heated terrace. The upstairs room has views over the river, which I love. It’s in a very quaint village. You feel so very English stopping here for a tea or traditional breakfast.

Oli Bonny

We stumbled across this pizzeria whilst exploring Bourton on the Water. Expect great wood-fired pizza with interesting flavours.

Restoration Hardware

I went to Restoration Hardware for a special lunch with my partner. Don’t be put off by the name: it’s the most beautiful country manor house, and the restaurant has incredible high ceilings and views over the lawn. We watched deer whilst we had lunch, which had a very cool American brasserie undertone. There’s also a pizza restaurant there, which looks wonderful, though I’m yet to try it. You can walk around the stunning house and gardens, and there’s also a great bar.

The Bull, Charlbury

I love the simplicity of the food here. They use excellent produce and it’s so cosy for a quintessential Cotswolds pub lunch. With log fires and candlelight in winter, I never want to leave.

The Mason's Arms

One of my favourite pubs to eat in is in the heart of a little village called Clanfield. Sion, the manager, is amazing, the prices are reasonable and you can enjoy very fresh oysters in the countryside. The village is lovely for a post-lunch walk.

The Wild Rabbit

Owned by Daylesford, this is a very beautiful pub – I was so pleased to do a pop-up here in 2025. I love sitting by the fire for a drink with some bar snacks. They also have wonderful bedrooms and cottages to stay in.
